FEAR IN A DESERT CITY

scene: epilog railroad crossing

original filming date: December 1962

location: parking lot off Romaine Street (between Formosa & LaBrea), West Hollywood

Movie Magic: the choice of angle and use of night shooting and smoke made this shot appear lonely and rural. Eliminated were the tell-tale Hollywood hills and nearby industrial buildings. In the 2001 photo, the RR tracks are still visible beyond the chain link. When I returned in 2006 to retake the photo from a higher and more matching angle, the parking lot had been paved over, and the adjacent building used in the cat scene (see above) had been torn down! Luckily the director of this episode, Walter Grauman, came along on the earlier outing to help identify the spot where he created the classic FUGITIVE image 39 years earlier.

THE END GAME

scene: Kimble arrives at a house to hide in after his roadblock escape.

Alot has changed in this neighborhood with the original old dark wood house, and the building next to it both replaced with a stucco apartment building. If not for a few surviving buildings 2 doors away and down to block, this might have been impossible to find.

The house Gerard has just walked down from is also gone but the one dominating the background, at 2713 3rd, is still there as is the awning above the door where the cop stands facing away. Unfortunately foliage blocks it in this view.

THE SAMUEL GOLDWYN STUDIOS

1041 N. Formosa, West Hollywood

Its main gate, mill, small backlot, and other buildings often played roles in FUGITVE filming.

But stages 1 and 2 were the "home base" for the shooting of the series. Different interior sets were quickly put up and knocked down each week as this "on the run" show had nothing permanent.

On Xmas morning 1975, fire erupted on the studio lot and destroyed the 30,000 square foot building which housed these 2 stages. Quinn Martin was still a tenant there and his "Cannon" and "Barnaby Jones" TV series now occupied the stages. The fire destroyed not only those shows current sets but also business records stored in the building. 9 years of production information from "THE FBI" were housed there and lost; one wonders if "THE FUGITIVE" had its long term storage there as well.

The studio had had a larger fire in May of 1974 which had destroyed its stages 3, 4, and 5.

The stages have since been rebuilt and the studio is now independently owned and is called "The Lot". It had previously been under the control of Warner Brothers in the 80's and 90's.
